  HELPING ANIMALS WITH FLOWER ESSENCES

by Sarah Turner

A safe and effective therapy for all animals at all stages of life

Animals have always been close friends to human beings and as our lives become more stressful, so do theirs. Our animals also experience many of the same emotions as us - such as anxiety and depression and flower essences are a safe and wonderfully effective treatment for such times.

I have been working professionally as a Flower Essence Consultant since 2003 and have been very blessed to meet many animals during this time who have taught me so much about how profoundly essences can benefit them.

Animals live in a rich sensory world. Dogs interpret their world through their sense of smell; a cat's sense of hearing is far superior to ours as they can hear sounds that we cannot on both ends of the spectrum - so it is natural that their feeling world is also enriched and full. But can you imagine how it feels to live in a busy, noisy world, often far away from your natural habitat and where you can hear, smell and feel everything so much more than the humans you live with? So to treat them at this feeling level has enormous healing potential for them. Flower essences have no contra-indications and can be safely taken by animals of all ages and who may also be taking medication from their vet or using other complementary therapies.

So when would you use flower essences with animals?
Here are some ideas:
~ Animals - e.g. from rescue shelters who have gone through much upheaval and trauma
~ Pets who are ill or who are about to have or are recovering from surgery
~ During stressful times in the home – illness, moving, bereavement, divorce, separation due to holidays
~ For pets who are nearing the end of their lives and/or those that live with serious health issues
~ For grieving animals who have lost their carer or other members of their animal family

How do I give my pet flower essences?
It's very easy. Place 2-4 drops of essence in water or directly on to their food twice a day. In emergency situations a dose can be given as often as every few minutes. If essences cannot be given orally, they can also be stroked on to the animal's fur.

Some favourite animal stories from my practice

My best teacher was my own cat, Marvin, who passed away last year at the venerable age of 20. Marvin used essences for much of his life with us but particularly to help him through 3 anaesthetics and a weeklong stay in hospital at the age of 18.

Marvin's vet was happy to stroke Marvin with his own blend of essences throughout his 3½ hour operation and she was inspired when Marvin came through his health challenges with vigour and resilience. We also used flower essences to support Marvin and ease his passing. Marvin's teachings now live on in a range of flower essences made in his name - 'Marvin's Strongheart Essences'.

I first met Barney at the age of 16 when he was having regular fits. Barney's fits went from often several a day to nearly none at all for the remaining 4 years of his life. During this time Barney taught us so much about essences that help this condition and how best to administer them.

Scooby, a 2 year old rescued boxer, had an operation on his knee and his first anaesthetic left him with a serious chest infection. As soon as Scooby began using essences he started to feel better. He took a special essence for his leg alongside his own rescue remedy for several weeks until he was well enough for a second operation. His vet agreed to mist him with 'Marvin's Peaceful Place' flower essence spray during his 3 day recovery in hospital and this time he sailed through his operation and recuperated quickly.

Florie the rabbit was attacked by a fox in his garden. Using flower essences he recovered within days to the surprise and delight of his owners.

How do I know which essence to use?

A good place to start is always a quality 'Rescue Remedy'such as the 'Healing Herbs Five Flower Remedy' or 'Peaceful Pet' from Marvin's Strongheart Range.

You can read more testimonials of animals who have been helped by using flower essences by visiting www.flower-essences.net/animals. Marvin's Strongheart Range of flower essences is also available from my site www.flower-essences.net. Animal consultations are also available.

Dosage bottles of recommended 'rescue remedies' such as Healing Herbs Five Flower Remedy or the Alaskan Animal Care formula can be obtained from my practitioner stock or you can purchase stock bottles by visiting the following UK distributors:
