What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is a process of steps which webmasters use to get their websites ranking higher on search engines for specific keywords. Let’s say you are a hairdresser in London. You have a website where customers can check prices, see a gallery and book appointments. This website might not ever be findable on search engines if the correct steps haven’t been taken! You will likely want to rank for phrases such as “hairdresser appointments in London” “book a hair appointment online” etc. The webmaster can do a number of things to get your site ranking higher.
Why Do I Need SEO?
It is really the only way to get your website seen online! There isn’t much point in having a lovely website, if nobody ever finds it or looks at it. The website is often a very valuable conversion factor for many businesses, allowing thier clients to find more information and contact them. The website needs to be seen high up in search engine results pages, or very few people will get to find it on their own.
How Does SEO Work?
There are a number of factors which can influence the site’s ranking. These include:
- Strength of the domain – this can be due to a number of things. Firstly, older sites tend to be somewhat stronger than young sites, generally because they have more links to and from them. These links are important to search engines.
- Link profile – similar to the previous point, the quality of the links to and from the site will influence the ranking. Sites which have lots of poor quality links will not rank higher than a site which has only a few really good quality links!
- Title and heading tags – the title tags are the single most important factor for onsite SEO. The title tags simply explain what the page is about, and should feature the keyword you wish to rank for. Heading tags are similar, in that they also explain what the page is about and help to direct readers.
- Content – Google is especially keen to puch better quality content on websites. It is important that your website features a lot of good quality content, which is relevant, interesting and useful to the reader. Search engines do not like sites which set out to purely advertise their product. If it senses that your site is just full of adverts, it is highly likely that you will not rank well.
How Much Does SEO Cost?
This is a difficult question to answer, because there is no set price for SEO. A lot depends on the current state of the site, whether it has ever had a penalty against it, and how competitive the industry is. Some companies can do really well only paying a few hundreds pounds per month, others will take much more to see similar results!
